3/16/2020 (We technically started self quarantine on Saturday, so with all the posts moving forward tack on two days)
We started the day just like any other day on the weekend. Breakfast at the table. I bought lots of fun cereal to prepare for our baby wolves to devour it. I buy bags, not boxes. :) They were excited and all had seconds of their sweet sugary treats. They managed to drink half a gallon of milk. This is one thing that causes concern for me looking ahead. We drink milk like it's our job. We sat and made a schedule for the day and talked about what they all wanted to do each day. V wanted to change jobs because it's Monday. She's a creature of habit just like her mama.
Less than an hour later they wanted more food. Really. :/
We started with math. V got on iready first since she was the most well behaved. I worked with A on fractions. Comparing, ordering, all the fun stuff. We made number lines, drew pictures, and looked for the patterns. He's really good at his multiplication and division facts. He has already plowed through xtra math, so he doesn't technically have to practice his facts. Of course those are the few upper grade things I know I have easy access to.
Then we went outside and assessed the fire pit. It has been windy since Christmas so we had some picking up to do in the surrounding wooded region. The girls played on the swing set while Alton hit some balls. He got a few good ones in! Then we had art where the kids painted and colored Curious George. They requested apples and PBJ for lunch. Alton was in charge if dishes since V took care of breakfast. (mommy win!) Then we had more outside time because the kids are so full of energy!!! The girls and I read some stories in the van (Shark Lady and the Brave Penguin)-their idea, not mine. There is a beautiful smell in the back so we will be spending some chore time working on that tomorrow. More books inside and some reading for V. There is one set of laminating I didn't finish prepping last week-my silly sentences. There are 6 sets of 9 cards to choose from. Adjectives, nouns, verbs, punctuation. All the good parts that make a sentence, but they are silly when you put them all together. ;)
We watched science mom do some cool experiments with dry ice. Then we had a virtual field trip to the Cincinnati Zoo and learned about their hippos. We finished school time with reading about the Constitution. The first chapter was Shays' rebellion. We will be working through those for a while. The good part about being unsettled is that I still have different grade level materials in the basement. I started going through books a few weeks ago and found a 6 book set about SS. Looks like we have that subject covered for a while.
It's funny how planning to homeschool my own kids is so much more difficult than planning for school. I have a set routine that I know I am going to do certain things on certain days. I'm starting from scratch with my babies. I know how to teach all the things they need, but it's so different doing it at home. Without my resources. I'm thinking of all the great things I could be doing if I had ink in the printer and laminating sheets and all the things I have at school. But at the end of the day they are still learning something. This is going to take some time to get used to our new normal. We will love taking the time to slow things down and be a family. I can't wait to see the kind of leprechaun traps they make tomorrow. I'm bummed that 20 pounds of legos are sitting in my classroom. I had envisioned a great lego build to trap those little guys. We have lots of other building materials to work with though. Tomorrow is another day.
We survived day one. We are all healthy, happy and hopeful.
Vella's thoughts for the day:
That to day was the best day. I had fun with art.I like gym.I like recess. I like playing. I like to do the word game. (This is where she chooses different words and puts them together to make silly sentences. Then she practiced writing the words neatly on lined paper.)
Alton's thoughts:
Dinner was the best part of the day, we had chicken nuggets, and tater tots. Math and reading were fun.Wish I could have played prodigy. (Note he didn't say anything about playing baseball or getting his basketball hoop set up in the driveway.)
Callie's thoughts:
I liked painting. (She even painted the paper on her crayons)
Derreck's thoughts:
We should have gone out in the woods. 64 on Thursday, hoping to maintain an 8 foot distance while canoeing down the river.
